* = Updated 2009

June 2009: I have added a lot of older photos from the 1980's and 1990's to the TVDX pages. A lot of them are test cards and older captions. Pages with updates are indicated by a red star.

May 2009: The TV DX season here in Scotland is more or less here. I have seen a number of weak openings, and the tail end of a medium opening. Let us keep our fingers crossed for some openings sooner rather than later. Last year's late season here in Scotland was quite short, though there were intense openings. It is my interntion this summer to scan a load of my old 1980's and 90's photos of test cards etc to include in these pages.

There won't be logs as such on this page, only comments from time to time. The logs will be in the main logs/ dx diary pages as they happen. (Top left of the pop up menus)

August 2008: The TV DX season here in Scotland is coming to a close by the look of things. I thought it was time to add some images of the said DX in these pages. I have created links to pages from individual countries for some of my best TVDX photos and possibly movies.

Many European countries are sadly leaving band 1, but there is still TVDX to be seen. Despite Spain closing band 1 for what seems like the last 10 years or so, they are gladly still on the air, and a welcome visitor. Of course if they were off, it is obvious here in Europe that we would have more chance of the exotic African multi hop coming through, or that rare Middle Easten station, or maybe even further afield. But I always feel like it is an annual visit from an old friend in some respects!!

Temporary Band 1 Antenna: I have been meaning to do some major aerial work this summer, but somehow have not yet got around to it. Fellow DXer David Hamilton gave me a couple of aerials earlier in the year, when he was moving house. I think his words were something like

"If yer no feart tae ga up on the rif and tak them doon, ye can huv them".

So pretending I was nae feartie, i did climb up and retrieve them. I now have the home made (by Davie) band one antenna, which gives better results than my own ancient original 1960s band one aerial. My own antenna has a folded dipole on the main element, but David Hamilton's aerial is an open dipole. I have the new antenna on a temporary mast outside the shack. Dave also gave me the very same FM band 2 antenna which picked up his infamous and amazing Transatlantic band 2 dx in 2003. That is not yet erected in August 2008. Below, the temporary mast with the band 1 aerial on top. The aerial is seen below, photographed when there was a rainbow in the sky. Not sure if that is a sign of anything... O yes.. I remember now... RAIN!!! Click to enlarge.

One problem I have never really had much here in my village is these silly 49mhz baby monitors. Now a friends daughter has recently started using one of the bad ones. I have told her that it is nothing more than a bug in her house, and anyone can hear what is being said. Still they use it!! Ahhhhh. If someone told me the place was bugged I would surely try to do something about it!!! I think I have to splash out and buy her a different type. It is really giving E2 and R1 beating!!

Years ago I seem to recall reading somewhere that ham operators on 50mHz at one time were not allowed to operate if they were so many miles from a band 1 TV transmitter. I guss that is a thing of the past. Often I have seen lines on screen around R1/ E2 which I used to assume to be 50mHz activity. This year for the first time, I have a receiver for that band, and indeed can confirm the lines are indeed ham operators. They are not however all local. Many powerful continental stations cause these lines too, during a strong opening. This surely must cause havoc on the televisions sets of viewers using the lower channels on band 1.

Written in 2005: After a break of a couple of years I have again reincarnated TVDXing as part of my DXing hobby as a whole. A gap of 2 or 3 years was mainly due to lack of antennas, or to be more correct, broken aerials because of both neglect and pruning of tall trees which came down through the aerial system!! Neglect was the biggest thing. The mast which supports the antennas was holding itself up by sky hooks and a prayer. I think about 5 guy wires were broken and needed replaced first before any attempt could be made climb to repair the aerials. Inspiration was gathered from the sporadic e openings at the end of May 05, and thus I have re-guyed my mast, so I can climb the thing in relative safety, and remove and repair bands 1 and 2 antennas. I use a 4 element band 1 antenna, and now every element including the dipole has been stripped, buffed/ wire brushed, greased and fitted with new bolts. It is better than new now as everything is greased, and new cable etc.

FM dx pages are available here.
