I have been uninspired since the Latin day last week. It wasn't a great opening, but a few things were heard on the hf end of the mw band. But since then... nothing. (of note). I have still been faithfully recording every day, but the band has died of death on us.
INTERESTING TOPIC OF SPRINGFIED ARMOURY 1710: I have been reporting the above station on 1710, last week when the band was good. But an interesting email came in from a dxer local to the station. He tells me that the test announcements that were heard in January seemed to be coming from his locality, rather than from NJ where the TIS station is located.
I have a few notes here for today.... First of all, this is the first time this week I have not heard 1710. But when tuning down the band a bit, there was no WWKB either, but instead there was LIBERTAD, Columbia. There are ss stations on 1590, 1470, 1350, 1520 and others. I must make a point of reconnecting my latin antenna today.

WHAT AM I HEARING ON 1710 AT 0500 - ANSWER .. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY: I had a much better signal this morning from the unids I have been chasing on 1710, and in fact I have been completely focusing on 1710!! There may have been rare stations down the band a bit, I don't know, as I haven't checked yet. But I do know that after chasing this for a week, I finally heard ids from Springfield Armoury / Armory (American spelling). But the other station with the YL was still there, but not so dominant today. It was heard just before 0500 with a web address again that is too weak. It also pops up a few times in and out with the MA station. I wonder what power these outfits are really running to make it all the way to Europe??? I hasten to add that by 0530 today there was virtually nothing. Around 0500 is obviously the peak of the propagation at this latitude at this time.

MISSING MALASIAN PLANE: Like most of the world I guess, I have been following the news lately for information about the mystery of the missing plane. I have not watched the news as closely in over 10 years I don't think. Normally I do not really pay much attention to news. Especially when it is mostly about lying, overpaid politicians. I just can't listen to crap that "David Cameron or Tony Blair has said today", or listen to some long boring media circus about an unknown gunslinger in South Africa I have never heard of. The latter has been such a pain to try and get through before the all important news of the missing plane comes on CNN. I guess long boring coverage of a media circus similar to the OJ Simpson business saves the news companies a fortune!!! At least during the news broadcasts that you have to suffer to wait for the bit you want to hear, sometimes something amusing comes up. I couldn't help but chuckle at the recent punch up in the Ukraine Parliament,,,,,LOL One politician even described this as DEMOCRACY IN ACTION... LOL. There are plenty clips on YOUTUBE!!! I would love to see this in the House of Commons..LOL But back to the subject, and have any other radio buffs been following these developments, and thought they saw something familiar in the footage from the Ozzy military?? Yes, it looks like the well known SPECLAB or similar that they are using to try and detect 37.5kHz signals!!
Maybe I also ask of the man made litter in the oceans, that initially was thought to be part of the wreckage. I wonder what happened to this junk, when it was hoisted on board the various search vessels?? Did they dispose of it properly, or find out that it wasn't linked to the plane, and simply chuck it back overboard, like the filthy disgusting morons that disposed of it in the first place? I of course realise some debris that finds it's way into the sea can't be helped as various extreme flooding washes all sorts into the ocean. But I have become very disillusioned with the human race as a whole with regards the litter in our seas. This was highlighted only recently by the high tides in my own part of the world, and the state of the seaside towns and beaches. Rant rant rant...... I could create enough text here for a paperback. WHERE ARE THE AMERICAN NEWS SERVICES? And seeing as we are on the subject of news services. Why is it that the UK seems to be the best represented on the 28 degrees satellite?? I know it is a UK satellite, targeted mainly at the UK. But in these days of pan European broadcasting, you would have thought the Americans would have outlets in Europe? I remember the days we used to be able to see CNN here in Europe, but I wouldn't know if that is available now at all free to air in Europe. All we have is CNN Europe, which was pretty hopeless when the Hurricane struck NY in October 2012. At that time I even tried to stream NY TV channels, but there were no proper live web streams that I could find, the likes of which you find for radio stations. I discount Fox News, not because of their political bias, but because it is not free to air in Europe. I also discount CNBC and Bloomberg on the grounds that they are not news stations as such. They are non stop stocks and shares... So we only have three main stations to switch between with much hope of detailed reports on the afore mentioned plane. Sky News, BBC News and CNN Europe on satellite. There is also France 24, RT from Russia, NHK (Japan), a couple of Chinese stns, Euronews, and even the dubious Al Jazeera in English, and a handful of others whose origins are not always easy to identify by their initials and station names. I wonder why there was never any attempt from the rest of the English speaking world to broadcast a pan European channel? Maybe there are no rolling news services in Australia, Canada, or the USA bar CNN and Fox??? I have no idea. It would be nice to see a relay of an ABC (Ozzy) or CBC (Canada) service here in Europe, but I guess because of financial limitations, this will never happen.
I have been hearing an unid signal or signals on 1710kHz here in Bonnie Scotland. The peak time seems to be around 0500, which is first light here at the moment. Remember all times are reported as GMT. I recorded 0430 and 0530 one of the mornings and there was no trace. The peak must only be around the 0500 mark. There has been a report of a new station near Springfield MA on 1710 for a military museum of some kind. There is also the TIS station in NJ which comes in from time to time, and was heard a few times with test announcements, as reported here on these pages some weeks ago. What I seem to be hearing now are two stations. A YL and OM. Initially I thought it may have been a YL and OM alternating. The clip from 10th has the YL sounding like she is saying Thursday April 10th at 18 seconds, and OM making mention of MA a couple of times. I know reception is certainly not ideal, by any means, but there is something in ee coming through every night this week so far on 1710. A dxer on the IRCA board (Russ) had a listen and suggested the YL may be SS, though I seem to hear ee word from time to time. Mark in NJ also had a listen. The signal just needs a little boost from the conditions at the right time one of these days. A few audio different clips are included here.... Recording 0456 thru 0535 tonight, to see if anything can be made of the signals.

WEGP 1390 - THE TALK OF THE COUNTY - BOOMING: The other day WEGP was absolutely booming in on 1390 at 0500, proving there is life left in the band yet!! It may as well have been coming from up the road!!
I have nothing of interest here to report really. There was a dx test on Saturday night, but there was no trace of it here in Scotland on 1450. Signals here this morning were pretty good, with many of the common stations still coming through at 0800 GMT, which is three hours after first light. (I woke at 0500Z today and noticed it was just starting to get light.) WNYY 1470 was quite good for example at 0500. That has been a regular this season, along with WLAM on 1470..
