Telstar 1 broadcast rock music on 235m / 1277kHz to North London from late 1977 to 1978 and sometimes put in long hours.
When they initially started there was an issue over the frequency as both East London Radio and Celebration Radio also had used the channel.
This was apparently sorted and ELR went on to use 1511kHz, whilst Celebration moved up to 1286kHz.

1977_10_15_sun_telstar1_1277am_1330-1440_bear_airchecks-ghe187.mp3 New Dec 2024 A partially airchecked show from Bear as received on Sunday 15th October 1977. Mention is made of a rival pulling down their aerial and address and telephone number are given out. The location of the recording from 235m is not known and the tape was not the best quality, hence it is a bit muffled. There was also a heterodyne creeping in at the end, which we have tried to filter out. 55MB

1978_09_10_sun_telstar1_1277am_rayrat_paul_ann_onymous_pt2-gh208.mp3 New Apr 2025 This recording is partially airchecked, and is more of Ray Rat, followed by Paul, and then the first link from Ann Onymous possibly around 11am. The station had a transmitter modulation issue during this part and requests for help from 'Number 6' were given over the air.  Eventually there is an announced switch off for a few seconds which seemed to solve the issue, and also showed the programmes were actually 'live'. As received on 1277kHz / 235m. 89MB

1978_09_10_sun_telstar1_1277am_various_in_studio_airchecks_to_signoff_pt3-gh208.mp3 New Apr 2025 The third and last recording from Sunday 10th September 1978, from this 'live' broadcast is partially airchecked and leads up to closedown, although we are not sure what time the actual closedown was, possibly around 7pm.  Requests on the phone line continued to be read out, and apparently had reached 173 for the day. Amongst others in the studio, a new presenter calling himself 'Ring Leader' was heard. The transmitter on 1277kHz can be heard switching off shortly after the station had signed off. It was interesting that in this show, it was announced that the station had been on for 8 Years and 3 Weeks. 55MB
